Plenty to Explore Beyond the Lake
Lake Vermilion may be the main attraction, but there’s plenty to explore when you’re ready for a day off the water. Nearby communities and the surrounding Northwoods and Iron Range offer outdoor recreation, arts and culture, family attractions, golf and popular seasonal events.

Northwoods Attractions
Visit the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary, explore the Bog Walk in Orr, or browse local art at Northwoods Friends of the Arts in Cook. Families will enjoy Cook’s Country Connection, a local petting zoo with an eclectic animal collection and a children’s playground conveniently located on the way to Wolfe’s Den.

Head to Tower for Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park and its historic mine tour, or visit the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm for a look at the people, communities and mining heritage of Minnesota’s Iron Range.

Hiking, Biking & Golf
Walk or bike a portion of the recently completed 165-mile Mesabi Trail, now connecting Grand Rapids all the way to Ely, or hike the trails to Lookout Mountain for sweeping Northwoods views.

Golfers will find some of Minnesota’s top-rated public golf nearby, including The Wilderness at Fortune Bay in Tower and the acclaimed Quarry and Legend courses at Giants Ridge.
